Advocates want Jena company permission to produce, distribute Covidex quashed by court

By Mukembo Wilfred

The Advocates for People (AfP) led by its Secretary General Hon.Kasibante Moses a former Lubaga North Member of parliament have filed a public interest suit in the High Court to quash the decision of the National Drug Authority granting Jena Herbals Uganda Ltd, permission to produce, sell and distribute Covidex drug as communicated to the public in a press release dated the 29th day of June 2021.

According to Hon. Kasibante the declaration contained in the said press statement was irrational, legally improper, unjustified and reached without due regard to the law and rules of natural justice.

AfP now seeks for a declaration that Mbarara University of Science and Technology be granted a right to patent Covidex Drug as enshrined in The Industrial Property Act of 2014.

“Ugandans are accessing this drug exorbitantly yet the World Bank and Government of Uganda invested colossal sums of money in inventing and production of Covidex. It is upon that background that we think the citizens should access this supportive drug in the management of viral infections cheaply as tax payers.” said Hon Kasibante
