Corruption, mindset failing the achievement of SDGs in Uganda- MPs reveal

By Kabuye Ronald

The women Members of parliament representing Namayingo and Terego districts, Margaret Makokho, and Obigah Rose respectively have asserted that corruption and the bad mindset of the society are the main hindrance to Uganda’s achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

Speaking during the peer to peer engagement organized by the United Nations Association of Uganda (UNAU) in Kampala, Hon. Makokho who is also the chairperson of Forum on Children in Parliament asserted that the reason as to why people are still in unpleasant conditions and the slow achievement of the SDGs rotates around corruption, misuse and embezzlement of money and resources by those with the mandate and authority.

Hon. Makokha says that the achievement of the SDGs by 2030 can only be realized if the resources are put to good use. “The money and the resources we have as Uganda is enough to develop our hospitals, schools, roads, to empower youth, women and all needy Ugandans, and also achieve all our SDGs. We only need to get rid of corruption and encourage peer to peer candid talk that is solution based. We should also change our mindset as well as government should put in place avenues, systems and infrastructures for us to work and get ourselves out of poverty.”

Hon. Obigah Rose, the Woman Mp for Terego District urged everyone to avoid any form of corruption, bribery and selfishness in order to enable the country fulfill the SDGs which will enable everyone live a pleasant life.

She also highlighted on the importance of having a positive mindset change by everyone.

“The mindset change is very important in putting an end to the suffering and poverty since two are in our minds. People have land and ways of making money but if they don’t have a mindset change they will forever remain in poverty and in suffering.

We must also strive to change lives of others that are vulnerable and in need by stopping thinking that whatever you have or get is for yourself, wife, children and siblings since those that are in poor state will one time turn against you. By now we would have achieved the SDG if we were positively thinking and working with one heart.  it starts with me and you, can we all say no to corruption and take up our responsibilities, contribute the little we have for the good cause in our communities, encourage youth involvement in execution of duties and encourage positive and candid peer to peer talk” said Hon. Obigah

Hon. Akugizibwe Ronald, the Member of Parliament for Buruuri constituency called for cooperation and togetherness with all stakeholders in order to achieve the SDGs by 2030

The Secretary General for United Nations Association of Uganda (UNAU) Richard Baguma Tinkasimire said it is important as peers to learn from each other since the SDGs implementation program brings together those from various countries including those that have achieved a lot in relation to SDGs and development projects.

“We are trying to learn from each other on what has worked and not, why and what can we do to make sure that we accelerate the achievement of the SDGS BY 2030” Said Baguma

Currently the world still has 9 years to have the 17 SDGs achieved which include: (1) No Poverty, (2) Zero Hunger, (3) Good Health and Well-being, (4) Quality Education, (5) Gender Equality, (6) Clean Water and Sanitation, (7) Affordable and Clean Energy, (8) Decent Work and Economic Growth, (9) Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, (10) Reducing Inequality, (11) Sustainable Cities and Communities, (12) Responsible Consumption and Production, (13) Climate Action, (14) Life Below Water, (15) Life On Land, (16) Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, (17) Partnerships for the Goals.
