Drowning Incident Claims Lives of Three Children in Kyankwanzi District

By Mukembo Wilfred

Police are investigating a heartbreaking drowning incident that resulted in the deaths of three young children in Biroboka Cell, Kyankwanzi Town Council.

The victims, identified as Sylvia Bambozo, 8, Alex Mugwanya, 6, and Oliva Namuli, 3, were all children of Patrick Ssekiziyivu, a resident of the area.

The tragedy unfolded on August 28, 2024, when the children were left unsupervised. Their mother, Noor Nambozo, had traveled to their previous home in Byerima Village to handle some domestic chores. At the time of the incident, their father, Ssekiziyivu, had gone to Lubiri Trading Centre to visit a friend, leaving the children unattended.

According to a statement from Wamala Region Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala, the father was informed while at the trading center that his children had drowned in a dam on the farm of Petero Tumushabe, located in Biroboka Cell. The police have since dispatched a task team to investigate and document the scene.

“Preliminary findings suggest that the children were left alone without a caretaker, leading to the tragic incident,” Kawala said. “We urge parents and guardians to exercise vigilance and ensure that children are never left unattended, even for short periods.”

The local community and authorities are mourning the loss of the young lives, and the incident has raised urgent concerns about child safety and supervision.

The police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the drowning and have appealed to the public to take necessary precautions to prevent such tragedies in the future.
