The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has announced the final results of the 2024 National Population and Housing Census, indicating that Uganda’s population now stands at 45,905,417—a notable 11.3% increase over the past decade, equating to a growth rate of 2.9%.
During a dissemination event at Serena Hotel in Kampala, UBOS Executive Director Dr. Chris Mukiza shared key findings from the census. He reported that women constitute 53% of the population, totaling 24,338,681, while men make up 47%, or 21,566,736. Notably, children under 17 years represent half of the population, and youth aged 18 to 30 account for 23.5%. Additionally, the elderly, aged 60 and above, also comprise a significant portion of the demographic.
The census highlighted Uganda’s diverse religious affiliations, with Christians making up 84.3% of the population and Muslims 13.6%. The number of households has also risen, with a total of 10,698,913 recorded nationwide.
Dr. Mukiza underscored the importance of addressing the needs of the growing youthful population by increasing government investments in early childhood education. He emphasized that tailored educational initiatives are crucial for harnessing the potential of this demographic and ensuring sustainable development for the country.
