Businesswoman Stabbed to Death, Police Launch Hunt for Killer

By Robert Segawa

Residents of Bamunanika Cell in Mityana Municipality woke up in grief on Monday following the murder of a local businesswoman, Nansubuga Lydia, popularly known as Madam.

The gruesome attack occurred at around 10:00 p.m. on Sunday in Katakala Ward, Busimbi Division, Mityana Municipality.

According to preliminary police findings, Nansubuga was found lying in a pool of blood inside her home with two stab wounds to the neck.

The incident came to light after a neighbour, Nampewo Eron, sent her child to buy groceries from Nansubuga’s retail shop. When the child delayed returning, Nampewo went to check on them and found Nansubuga’s seven-year-old daughter seated outside the house.

When asked where her mother was, the child reportedly said she was sick inside the house.

Moments later, Nampewo heard Nansubuga weakly crying out, “Munyambe, nfa” (“Help me, I’m dying”). She rushed into the house and found the businesswoman lying in a pool of blood and struggling to stay alive.

Shocked by the scene, Nampewo alerted the LC I chairperson, who responded together with other residents. They attempted to rush the victim to Mityana General Hospital, but she died as they were lifting her into the vehicle.

Wamala Region Police spokesperson Lameck Kigozi confirmed the incident, saying police were notified by the area LC I chairperson. A homicide team from Mityana Central Police Station (CPS) was dispatched to the scene.

Kigozi said Scene of Crime officers documented and processed the scene while detectives recorded statements from witnesses. Police also recovered a suspected murder weapon—a knife with bloodstains—about one metre from the scene.

The body was taken to Mityana General Hospital for a postmortem examination as investigations continue.

Police say efforts are underway to identify and arrest those responsible for the killing.

“We appeal to residents of Bamunanika Cell who may have information of evidential value to come forward and assist investigators so that those responsible for this gruesome murder can be brought to justice,” Kigozi said.
