University students condemn state use of restrictions to curtail advocacy for their rights

University student’s movement across Uganda have condemned the state use of different measures and restrictions to curtail safe space to advocate for what is right.

In a statement issued by the movement has been marred in a spiral of restrictions on civic space and yet Student Movements are the next crop of leaders and concerned citizens across the country.

“We have witnessed a crackdown against civil society, including university student movements, youth movements and political formations.

Student leaders who always mobilize their colleagues to stand for their rights have been sabotaged in the process of doing so. The students, who are advocating for what they think is right, should be listened to, protected and their ideas weighed for decision making processes.” Reads a statement

We critic bad leadership in our institutions and country that has facilitated these sad happenings but also ask for alternative leadership policies on how concerns and institutions need to be managed.” It added

They asserted that the COVID-19 pandemic has tested the ability of the Government in implementing Emergency and digital learning solutions. Which they say is proven by the education system not being guarded against shocks.

They further urged the students across Uganda to identify issues in their institutions to speak and act about them.  

“We call upon the institutions of higher Learning and Universities should reflect on the existing policies to design policies that assure student participation in decision making processes on issues that affect them directly. Such as increasing student representation on University Councils.

The Government should implement alternative leadership approaches on how Universities should be managed such as the appointment of University Leadership should be one that will solve state infiltration.

The media to help in publication and broadcasting of these issues and amplify student voices.

The Government to prepare the education system from shocks of the COVID-19 nature such as by harnessing the eLearning systems.”
