Uganda currently loses 20 trillion shillings to corruption annually according to the Inspector General of Government (IGG) Hon. Betty Olive Namisango Kamya.
While meeting the speaker of parliament Rt. Hon. Jacob Oulanyah, Kamya revealed that according to the National Integrity Survey (NIS) Uganda loses shs. 20.2 trillion to corruption.
The survey indicates that 459.2 bn is lost in public facilities, 131.2 bn in taxation, 15 trillion in environmental degradation, 2 trillion in absenteeism in public offices, 451.1 bn in the healthcare and education provision, 86.1 bn in security provision, 590.4 bn in procurement and budgeting and 233.7bn in regulation related corruption.
Kamya also expressed dismay over Uganda being ranked as one of the top corrupt countries in the world but assured the country that she will put more efforts in preventing corruption.
She further urged parliament to start debating IGG’s reports that are submitted to it so that they come with necessary solution based recommendations.
Meanwhile, the speaker of parliament Rt. Hon. Jacob Oulanyah urged Kamya to first clean up the IGG office since many of the staff also get involved in corruption which compromises the office’s work.
