Five prisoners have lost their lives and several others sustained serious injuries after a truck they were travelling in from Butuntumula prison overturned on Monday morning
According to the Road Traffic and safety Police spokesperson, Faridah Nampiima the accident happened along Kampala- Gulu highway at Nalongo in Luwero District at around 9am when a Prisons truck carrying 54 inmates from Butuntumula prison lost overturned.
“The accident happened when a Toyota Fielder moving from Gulu side had a tyre burst , lost control and rammed into an oncoming prisons truck and in trying to avoid the small vehicle, the truck overturned killing the five prisoners instantly,”Nampiima said.
The prisoners and prison staff have since been evacuated and admitted to Luweero referral hospital for medical attention, whereas the dead bodies have also been taken to the hospital mortuary for postmortem.
The two vehicles have been towed to Luweero Central Police Station as investigations into the accident continue.
