Tragedy struck on the roads of Kagadi District as a head-on collision resulted in the loss of three lives, leaving a community in mourning. The incident, which occurred at Nakulabye, claimed the lives of two drivers and an occupant, highlighting the devastating consequences of irresponsible behavior behind the wheel.

According to Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police spokesperson, the fatal collision occurred around 12:15 am, casting a dark shadow over what should have been a peaceful night. The drivers involved in the crash, identified as Businge Tumusime and Joseph Mwesigwa, were on their respective routes when their vehicles collided with tragic force.

Businge Tumusime, at the helm of a Mitsubishi Canter bound for Kyenjojo, had allegedly been spotted earlier in the evening indulging in alcohol with friends in Kyenzige, a mere 2 kilometers from the accident site. Despite being visibly intoxicated, he made the ill-fated decision to take the wheel, setting off a chain of events that ended in disaster.

The collision claimed the lives of Businge Tumusime, Joseph Mwesigwa, and Patrick Katwesigye, an unfortunate occupant of the Canter. Despite efforts to save him, Katwesigye succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at Kakibogo Health Centre in Kagadi, adding to the grim toll of the accident.
Hakiza expressed dismay at the prevalence of drink driving despite repeated warnings from law enforcement. He emphasized the importance of adhering to police guidelines and called for greater responsibility among motorists, especially during the night when visibility is reduced and the risks are heightened.

The aftermath of the collision saw two survivors, Nicholas Mulindwa and Nicholas Kayemba, rushed to Kagadi main hospital for medical treatment. Their survival serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of road safety measures.
As Kagadi District grapples with the aftermath of this tragedy, the bodies of the deceased have been transferred to Kagadi hospital mortuary, where they await final arrangements. The incident underscores the urgent need for concerted efforts to curb reckless driving behaviors and promote a culture of responsible road usage to prevent further loss of life on Uganda’s roads.
