Justice Singiza starts hearing UMSC, Ggangu Case

The case between Uganda Muslim Supreme Council-UMSC and the group of Muslims opposed to Eminence Mufti Sheikh Mubaje led UMSC administration commenced today, June 19, 2024, at the High Court Civil Division at Twed Tower, Kampala Capital City.

In his opening address, which he termed “housekeeping,” the trial Judge Dr. Singiza Douglas Karekona, provided background on the case’s relocation from the Jinja High Court following directives from the Principal Judge.

The judge also addressed recent hostile propaganda, including accusations made against him by various communications, suggesting he was compromised by the UMSC, led by Mufti Mubaje. He disclosed that it was actually way round his longtime high school friend who had approached him with a significant bribe from the anti-Mufti Mubaje clique, which he rejected, stating he was prepared to reveal their names if necessary .Justice Singiza then inquired whether any member of the legal teams from either party had any objections to him personally before proceeding. Both sides confirmed they had no reservations about him as the trial judge.

The UMSC was represented by Counsel Musa Kabega, while the Ggangu team was led by Counsel Luyimbazi Nalukoola.

The judge engaged in lively interactions with members of the public, mostly hired supporters of Ggangu, who included Isa Gule, Sheikh Muhammad Irumba, Sulaina Kigongo, Zulaikha Kamara, Sheikh Adam Mbazira, and Musa Muyinda among others.Despite making hostile remarks against the Principal Judge, they could not provide sound reasons why the trial judge should not proceed with the case, as long as he remained impartial.

The case was adjourned to November 27, 2024. In attendance was Hon. Counsel Haj Muhammad Ali Aluma, the UMSC Deputy Secretary General in charge of Finance and Administration.
