UPC Condemns Govt’s Response to Kiteezi Landfill Collapse, Urges Improved Waste Mgt and Support for Victims

By Jumah Kakomo

The Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) has expressed profound condolences to the families affected by the devastating collapse of the Kiteezi Landfill, which occurred on Saturday, August 11, 2024. The incident, which took place in Kiteezi, Kasangati Town Council, Wakiso District, has left a trail of destruction, claiming lives, injuring many, and destroying homes and livestock.

The Kiteezi Landfill, a major waste disposal site for Kampala, gave way, burying numerous people, animals, and properties under tons of debris. As the scale of the tragedy became clear, the nation was struck by the severity of the loss and the emerging stories of survival and heartbreak.

At a press briefing held on Wednesday at the UPC headquarters, party spokesperson Arach Oyat Sharon strongly criticized the government’s slow response and insufficient disaster management capabilities. Sharon highlighted the urgent need for enhanced waste management practices, including increased recycling efforts and investment in advanced technologies.

“This disaster serves as a stark reminder of the severe repercussions that can arise from neglecting environmental and public safety standards,” Sharon stated. She called for the establishment of a well-equipped Rapid Response Unit to address emergencies more effectively, noting that delays and inadequate resources significantly exacerbate the impacts of such tragedies.

Sharon also issued a warning to the government and stakeholders about the dangers of indiscriminate waste dumping and the environmental and health risks it poses. She advocated for substantial investments in research, technology, and infrastructure to ensure proper waste management and mitigate future risks.

In addition to addressing the disaster’s broader implications, Sharon urged the public to prioritize recycling and proper waste management practices, emphasizing that these measures could prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Faizo Muzeyi, head of UPC’s media and communications

Faizo Muzeyi, head of UPC’s media and communications, echoed the party’s sentiments regarding the insufficiency of current financial assistance for victims. He called for a more comprehensive support system tailored to individual needs to effectively address the aftermath of the disaster.

Muzeyi also took a moment to extend heartfelt condolences to the family of former Presidential Press Secretary Joseph Tamale Mirundi, who recently passed away. Describing Mirundi as a significant figure in the country, Muzeyi honored his memory and contributions to Uganda.
