Katabi Town Council Mayor Kalema Closes Nkumba Bukolwa Dumping Site Amid Ongoing Garbage Crisis

By Namuli N Racheal

In a decisive move to address a pressing waste management issue, Katabi Town Council Mayor Ronald Kalema has officially closed the Nkumba Bukolwa dumping site. The closure comes after the Entebbe municipality failed to implement a prior agreement aimed at curbing garbage dumping in the area.

Approximately a month ago, a meeting was held involving mayors from Entebbe, Katabi, Nansana, and Kira, chaired by Right Hon. Rebecca Kadaga from the Office of the Prime Minister. During this meeting, it was resolved that garbage trucks from Kampala would be immediately halted from dumping in Nkumba Bukolwa. However, despite this resolution, garbage trucks continued to deposit waste at the site, leading to growing frustration among residents.

Residents have repeatedly urged Mayor Kalema to take action against the ongoing pollution and the stench emanating from the dumpsite. In response, Kalema criticized the leaders of Entebbe municipality for their inaction, prompting him to take a firm stand by closing the dumping site.

“I will be relocating my office to Nkumba Bukolwa until we see a complete stop to the garbage trucks from Kampala,” Mayor Kalema declared.

His commitment underscores the urgency of addressing the garbage crisis and ensuring a cleaner environment for the residents of Katabi.

The mayor’s bold decision reflects the growing concern for public health and the environment, as local leaders and communities continue to grapple with the challenges of waste management in the region.
