Six Traditional Herbalists Arrested with Dead Human Bones and Skeletons

By Robert Segawa
Police in Buwenge Division, Jinja District, have arrested six traditional herbalists following an intelligence-led operation that uncovered sacks of dead human bones and skeletons in their shrines. The operation, led by Kiira Region Police Commander SSP Charles Nsaba, was prompted by public outcry over the disturbing activities of the suspects, who were allegedly making demands for human remains for economic or ritualistic purposes.

The six suspects, identified as Afani Zubairi (62), Ronald Mukasa (51), Ibrahim Iswezi (42), Nathan Nantakika (32), Herman Wabitotya (18), and Sharif Mugere (18), are accused of disturbing the peace of the dead. They were found in possession of human remains believed to date back over fifty years.

James Mubi, the Kiira Region Police spokesperson, confirmed that the police are conducting thorough interrogations to determine where the remains came from and the intended use. Samples of the bones and skeletons have been sent to a forensic lab for DNA analysis to further investigate their origins.

“The public should come forward if they have been victims of such activities. These suspects have been causing harm and distress, and we are committed to bringing them to justice,” Mubi said.

The police operation aims to address a disturbing trend where traditional herbalists allegedly extort people by demanding body parts in exchange for promises of healing, restoring relationships, or solving personal problems. Mubi urged the public to report any such incidents and avoid engaging with those who exploit vulnerable individuals through these unlawful practices.

The suspects face serious charges under the law, and police are urging traditional healers to cease any harmful practices that may cause legal, social, and economic repercussions. “It is crucial that herbalists and all members of society engage in lawful and ethical practices,” Mubi added.
