Police Urges Motorists to Equip Vehicles with Fire Extinguishers to Prevent Property Losses

By Robert Segawa

The police have issued a strong advisory urging all motorists to carry fire extinguishers in their vehicles as a safety precaution to prevent and control fire incidents. The call comes after a recent fire involving a Gateway Bus Company vehicle, registration number UAH 743Y, which was en route to Moroto.

According to reports, the incident occurred when the bus suffered a tyre burst while traveling through Bulyankuyege Nyenga in the Njuru division. The driver, attempting to locate a spare tyre without removing the damaged one, inadvertently caused friction that sparked a fire. The situation escalated, causing significant damage to the bus and highlighting the dangers of neglecting fire safety precautions.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Kituuma Rusoke, emphasized the importance of having fire extinguishers in vehicles, pointing out that such devices are relatively inexpensive compared to the high costs of vehicles, particularly buses. “We wonder how such a cheap piece of equipment is overlooked, yet a bus costs millions of shillings,” Kituuma stated during the weekly security press conference at the Naguru Police Headquarters.

The police spokesperson further encouraged not only vehicle owners but also business owners, including schools and private establishments, to invest in fire-fighting equipment to safeguard their properties.

This recommendation aims to reduce the risk of fire-related damage and ensure the safety of both individuals and property on the road.
