Electoral Commission Sets Date for Kawempe North By-election, Calls for Peace and Vigilance

The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially scheduled the by-election to fill the Kawempe North Parliamentary seat and the vacant councillor position for Kazo Angola at Kawempe Division for March 13, 2025. The seat became vacant following the death of incumbent Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, who passed away earlier this month after a prolonged hospitalization while for Kazo Angola councillor was due to tragic car accident.

EC Chairperson Simon Byabakama made the announcement on Monday during a stakeholders’ meeting at Tick Hotel in Kawempe.

He revealed that the electoral process will begin this week across 197 polling stations in the Kawempe North area, with candidates to be nominated from February 26 to February 27, 2025. The inspection of candidate papers will follow from February 27 to March 5, and the campaign period will run from February 28 to March 11.

Byabakama urged stakeholders to work together for peaceful and fair elections, calling for adherence to electoral laws throughout the process. He also emphasized the importance of vigilance to prevent voter bribery and other electoral malpractices.

For those interested in observing the by-election, Byabakama clarified that applications for election observers must be submitted to the EC for approval. He encouraged suggestions and proposals from the public to ensure a transparent and fair process.

Rehema Nassuna, the Assistant Returning Officer for Kawempe Division, added that there will be 197 polling stations for Kawempe North and 8 for the Kazo Angola seat. She further urged local council members and residents to remain vigilant and ensure that only eligible voters, those born in or residing within Kawempe North are allowed to register for the by-election.
