The Opposition Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party has urged the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to intensify sensitization efforts among the masses regarding electoral activities, particularly Special Interest Groups (SIGs), ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The deadline for resignation by Public Servants wishing to participate in Special Interest Groups (SIGs) Committees elections is Monday, 28th April 2025. The nomination of village SIG Committee Candidates for the Older Persons, Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and Youth is scheduled for Monday 2nd June 2025 while polling for the said committees will start on 16th June 2025 accordingly.

The spokesperson of UPC Arach Oyat Sharon emphasizes the need for comprehensive civic education to ensure citizens are well-informed about the electoral process. She is calling upon all members and other Ugandans in general who fall under that category (SIGs) to take note of the earmarked dates and prepare accordingly especially the 28th of April 2025, which is the deadline for resignation by public servants wishing to participate in SIGs Committees elections.
“This activity is very key as some leaders have, in the recent past lost offices due to noncompliance with this requirement of resignation, and we would not want any leader to follow suit of the same when there is ample time to avert it,”Sharon said

According to Sharon, the party is in the process of finalizing an update of its electoral roadmap in preparation for the 2025/2026 general elections that will guide all UPC activities leading up to the national polls, including grassroots mobilization, internal party elections, selection of flag bearers and campaign strategies
Arach has called on party leaders and members to continue mobilizing and registering new members. This effort, launched by Party President Hon. Jimmy Akena, in February, aims to strengthen the party’s presence across the country.
