Police have issued a stern warning to criminal gangs allegedly plotting to disrupt this year’s Martyrs’ Day celebrations at the Namugongo shrines, saying any attempts at mayhem will be met with firm and decisive action.

Martyrs’ Day, commemorated every June 3rd, attracts thousands of pilgrims to Namugongo from across the country and beyond. However, authorities say some individuals exploit the large crowds to engage in criminal activities.
Addressing the media on Monday, police spokesperson ACP Rusoke Kituuma said the Joint Operation Command is actively coordinating to ensure public safety during the event.

“We promise very decisive countermeasures,” ACP Kituuma warned. “Let them not cry when we grab them. We shall treat them to a real party.”
He revealed that criminal groups, often moving in packs known as “egaali,” are known to rob and harass unsuspecting pilgrims.

“We shall deal with them decisively,” he emphasized.
ACP Kituuma also cautioned the public to be alert, not only against criminals but also against imposters posing as priests to take advantage of the event.
