MP Mary Begumisa Urges Calm as Ssembabule NRM Chairperson Race Remains Contentious

By Olivia Nabaggala
The Woman Member of Parliament for Ssembabule District, Mary Begumisa Mugisha, has called for calm among National Resistance Movement (NRM) members as they await the rescheduling of the district chairperson election.

The previous attempt to elect the Ssembabule District NRM Chairperson on May 23, 2025, ended in chaos, marred by violence and sharp disagreements between rival factions. The two opposing camps, led by Retired Gen. Emmanuel Rwashande and Theodore Ssekikubo, accused each other of inciting unrest and sabotaging the electoral process.

Efforts to reach a consensus on how to conduct peaceful and transparent elections failed, leaving the chairperson seat vacant.

Despite the tensions, some positions on the mainstream committee were filled unopposed. These include: Vice Chairperson: Sodo Kaguta Aine, General Secretary: Mary Begumisa Mugisha, Treasurer: Shatsi Musherure and Publicity Secretary: Denis Ddumba

The competition for the district chairperson remains unresolved, with Mawogola West MP Hanifah Kawooya facing off against fellow aspirant Phinehas Katirima.

NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi has pledged to announce a new election date. He emphasized the importance of using a clean voter register, eliminating army interference, and ensuring improved conduct from all candidates to avoid a repeat of the previous disorder.
