Why DF Electoral Commission Has Embarked On Regional Candidate Nominations

By Kabuye Ronald

The Democratic Front (DF) Electoral Commission has announced a major shift in its nomination process, introducing regional nomination centers to streamline the exercise and ease the burden on aspiring candidates.

Speaking at the DF headquarters in Namirembe, Electoral Commission Chairperson Mr. Henry Lubowa said the regional approach aims to expedite the nomination process, reduce costs, and spare candidates the logistical challenge of transporting supporters and nominators to Kampala.

“This move is designed to make the process more accessible and efficient for our candidates across the country,” Mr. Lubowa said.

This week’s nomination schedule includes stops in Soroti, Busoga, and Busia, among other regions. So far, the commission has successfully nominated 239 candidates seeking positions in Parliament and local government councils.

Now in its eighth day, the exercise has seen a steady stream of notable aspirants, including:

  • Mr. Robert Mukiibi, contesting for the Lubaga North MP seat, who emphasized the need for a more vocal representative in Parliament.
  • Mr. Ssenyonga Moses, seeking the party’s endorsement to run for Lord Mayor of Kampala City.
  • Mr. Muhindo Kimasu, aiming for the Kampala Central mayoral seat.
  • Ms. Bulyaba Lydia Lucky, contesting for the position of Woman Councilor for Kira Division in Kira Municipality.

The regional nomination process is expected to continue over the coming days, reaching more districts and easing access for candidates across the country.
