Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abbas Byakagaba has pledged to ramp up security operations in Kasangati and its surrounding areas following the brutal killing of local businessman Deo Bwanika.
Byakagaba made an impromptu visit to Kasangati Police Division on Thursday, just a day after the 51-year-old businessman was shot dead along Nangabo Road in Kitagobwa. During his visit, the IGP met with senior officers at the division headquarters, urging them to uphold discipline, serve the community selflessly, and ensure optimal use of resources to enhance service delivery.

He emphasized the importance of strengthening community policing to close the gap between the public and the security forces. He also issued a stern warning against corruption within the force, calling for greater integrity and accountability.
The Attack
According to police reports, the incident occurred around 10:00 p.m. on August 13 when six masked assailants armed with guns and pangas stormed Bwanika’s business premises. Posing as customers, the attackers demanded money from Bwanika and his employees.

A struggle ensued, during which Bwanika was fatally shot. One of his employees, identified as Julius, sustained a gunshot wound to the leg while attempting to intervene.
The attackers fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money, escaping on two waiting motorcycles.
Investigators have since cordoned off the crime scene, recorded witness statements, and transferred Bwanika’s body to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination. As of Thursday evening, no arrests had been made.
Police have appealed to the public for any information that could assist in identifying and apprehending the suspects.
