Presidential hopeful Elton Joseph Mabirizi has officially been nominated to contest in the 2026 general election under the Conservative Party (CP) flag, following a brief deferral earlier in the day due to issues with his academic documentation.

According to Electoral Commission chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, Mabirizi’s nomination was initially delayed after scrutiny of his documents revealed an unclear issue that needed to be resolved to comply with legal requirements.
The issue, Mabirizi later clarified, related to the certification of his Master’s degree by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). He was given until 4 PM today or tomorrow to meet the commission’s requirements.

Mabirizi, who previously ran for president in 2016, arrived at the Electoral Commission nomination venue in Lweza, along Entebbe Road, around midday. After the temporary deferral, he returned at approximately 3 PM with the required documentation resolved and was duly nominated.
He becomes the third presidential candidate to be nominated today, following incumbent Yoweri Museveni of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and Robert Kasibante of the National Peasant Party (NPP).
