The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety of the Uganda Police, through its Public Relations Officer SP Michael Kananura, has issued an official update regarding the tragic road accident that occurred along the Kampala–Gulu Highway. The confirmed death toll now stands at 46, revised from the initially reported 63 fatalities.

“At the time of the crash, several victims were found unconscious and may have been mistakenly included in the initial fatality count. We are working closely with health and emergency services to ensure accurate and timely updates as the situation evolves,” SP Kananura stated.

The fatal crash happened in the early hours of Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at approximately 12:15 a.m., at Kitaleba Village near Asili Farm, along the Kampala–Gulu Highway.

Details of the Incident

The collision involved four motor vehicles; UBF 614X – Isuzu Bus (Nile Star Coaches), CGO 5132AB 07 – Toyota Surf, UBK 647C – Tata Lorry and UAM 045V – Isuzu Bus (Planet Company)

According to preliminary investigations, the driver of the Nile Star Coaches Isuzu Bus (UBF 614X), traveling from Kampala towards Gulu, attempted to overtake a Tata lorry (UBK 647C). At the same time, an oncoming Isuzu bus (UAM 045V) operated by Planet Company, also attempted to overtake a Toyota Surf (CGO 5132AB 07).

The two buses reportedly collided head-on during their simultaneous overtaking maneuvers. One of the drivers swerved in an effort to avoid a collision, but this triggered a chain reaction of crashes, leading to multiple vehicles overturning and significant casualties.

The initial police statement reported 63 fatalities, including all occupants of the involved vehicles, with several others injured. The revised toll, now confirmed at 46, reflects more accurate assessments made after hospital verification.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident and extended condolences to the bereaved families. Via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, the President wrote:

“I have learnt with sadness about the tragic accident that occurred this morning along the Kampala–Gulu Highway, claiming many lives. I extend my condolences to the bereaved families and wish the injured a quick recovery.”

The President also directed the State House Comptroller to offer UGX 5 million to each bereaved family and UGX 1 million to those injured in the crash.

“I urge all road users to exercise utmost caution to prevent such tragedies. May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace.”

Police and traffic investigators are continuing their inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Authorities have urged all road users to adhere to traffic regulations, avoid reckless overtaking, and prioritize road safety to prevent further loss of life.
