Uganda Police Warn Politicians Against Using Ambulances as Lead Cars in Their Campaigns

By Robert Segawa

The Uganda Police Force has issued a stern warning to all political candidates and their campaign teams against the growing practice of using ambulances as lead cars—an act that violates traffic laws and the Ministry of Health’s guidelines.

The caution comes as police and other security agencies continue to monitor campaign activities nationwide ahead of the 2026 general elections. The ongoing campaigns cover presidential, parliamentary, local government, and special interest group positions, following the Electoral Commission’s official roadmap.

Addressing journalists this morning at Police Headquarters in Naguru, Police Spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke noted that some candidates have resorted to using private ambulances to clear their campaign routes, despite these vehicles being designated strictly for emergencies.

“Ambulances are for emergencies, and any driver caught misusing them will be arrested for violating traffic laws,” Kituuma stressed.

He added that ambulances should remain at the back of convoys and not be used as siren-blaring escorts to push through traffic.

Among other concerns raised by police and security agencies are the transportation of supporters in unsafe conditions, campaign processions disrupting traffic flow, and general disregard for traffic regulations.

Kituuma also warned the public about criminal groups disguising themselves in party colors and moving in gangs with the intention of robbing unsuspecting members of the public during campaign events.

He called on candidates and their agents to coordinate peacefully with their opponents to avoid unnecessary clashes or violence.

Despite the challenges, Kituuma assured citizens of maximum security throughout the campaign season, emphasizing the police’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful, orderly, and violence-free election period.
