NETA–Uganda Warns Public Against Surge of Counterfeit Goods and Crime Ahead of Christmas Festivities.

By Kabuye Ronald

The National Entrepreneur and Traders Association (NETA–Uganda) has cautioned the general public to exercise heightened vigilance while purchasing goods during the ongoing Christmas festive season, citing a sharp increase in counterfeit products and general criminal activity across markets and trading centers.

NETA–Uganda, a national umbrella body that brings together traders, entrepreneurs, and businesspeople across the country, issued the warning as part of its mandate to promote responsible business practices, economic empowerment, and strict compliance with national policies and tax obligations.

Speaking to the media, the NETA–Uganda National Chairman, Dr. Thadeus Musoke Nagenda, noted that the festive season often attracts unscrupulous individuals who flood the market with fake and substandard goods in an attempt to exploit the high consumer demand.

“During Christmas, many people are eager to buy gifts, food items, electronics, and clothing. Unfortunately, this period is also characterized by an influx of counterfeit products that can cause financial loss and even pose health and safety risks to consumers,” Dr. Nagenda said.

He urged members of the public to be cautious by purchasing goods from trusted and verified traders, checking for quality marks where applicable, and avoiding suspiciously cheap products that may be fake.

Dr. Nagenda further warned that the festive season also comes with increased cases of theft and other forms of criminality, especially in busy markets and shopping areas. He advised the public to take proactive security measures, including keeping emergency contacts of nearby police officers and local leaders.

“People should remain alert at all times. Crowded places provide opportunities for criminals, so it is important to safeguard personal belongings and know who to contact in case of any incident,” he added.

In addition, the NETA–Uganda chairman called upon traders and entrepreneurs to uphold ethical business standards and avoid dealing in counterfeit or illegal goods. He emphasized that responsible trading not only protects consumers but also strengthens trust in Uganda’s business community.

Dr. Nagenda also encouraged traders and entrepreneurs facing challenges during the festive season to seek guidance and support from NETA–Uganda. He noted that the association remains open and ready to assist its members and the wider business community.

“Any trader or entrepreneur experiencing difficulties should feel free to reach out to us. Our office is located at Yiga Chambers, St. Matia Mulumba Road, Old Kampala, and we are committed to supporting lawful and sustainable business operations,” he said.

NETA–Uganda reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with government agencies, law enforcement, and the public to promote safe trade, protect consumers, and ensure a secure and prosperous festive season for all Ugandans.
