The Deputy Executive Director of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Benon Kigenyi, has pledged to strengthen collaboration with Victoria University to encourage more students to pursue Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), which he said are increasingly important for employment opportunities.
Kigenyi made the remarks while touring exhibition stalls for participating companies during the Muslim Run Marathon held at the Cricket Oval Grounds in Lugogo, Kampala.
He said KCCA would work closely with Victoria University to promote awareness among students about the importance of embracing AI-powered education, noting that the changing global environment requires educational institutions and universities to integrate AI and other digital courses into their curricula.
“The new world order dictates that educational institutions and universities must embrace the teaching of AI-based digital courses,” Kigenyi said.
He commended Victoria University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Lawrence Muganga, and his technical team for encouraging students to take up ICT and AI courses, including through initiatives such as providing free laptops to new graduate students.
Kigenyi said the initiative had attracted hundreds of students and demonstrated the university’s commitment to equipping learners with skills relevant to the digital economy.
Prof. Muganga separately told this website in an exclusive interview on September 21, 2026, that the university’s collaboration with KCCA had been beneficial, with technical teams from the authority continuing to engage the university community and equip students with strategic knowledge in AI and digital technologies.
“Our close collaboration with the leadership of KCCA has borne fruits, as technical capacity-building programmes in AI and ICT have continued to provide insightful knowledge and promote innovations among our students pursuing ICT and AI courses,” Muganga said.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Kyadondo East in Wakiso District, Muwadda Nkunyingi, urged students to position themselves to participate in the growing digital economy and contribute to building a better future.
He said Parliament appreciated the work being done by the Victoria University management, particularly its efforts to promote the teaching of AI-based digital courses.
According to Nkunyingi, such initiatives can help equip graduates with skills that are increasingly relevant to the changing employment landscape.
