The Uganda aids commission has confirmed that the HIV/AIDs preventive injection will be ready for use by January 2024.
This has been disclosed by the Head of HIV prevention in the Uganda aids commission Daniel Byamukama ahead of the 3 days National HIV/AIDS symposium scheduled from 13-16 November 2023 at kololo ceremonial grounds.
Byamukama said that this method will only be injectable to only HIV / AIDs negative persons not the positive ones since its not meant for their treatment.
He says a person will be eligible for injection once in two months adding that they are targeting over 3000 Ugandans monthly but mostly women and adolescent girls since they are at higher risk of being infected with HIV.
Byamukama emphasized that the injection has already been approved for use by the world health organisation and currently it’s on trial in Uganda.
He also expressed concern over the increased cases of HIV with last year 2022 alone registering 52000 new cases and 17000 deaths yet the reduction was too low at 5%.
Byamukama also called for more funding of the commission from government since the HIV / AiDs prevalence is at 1.4m Ugandans with the most affected being the adolescent youths at 75%.
