By Kabuye Ronald

In a significant reshuffle within Uganda’s police force, President Yoweri Museveni has appointed retired Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Abbas Byakagaba as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP).

This appointment comes shortly after Byakagaba’s recent retirement from active service. Byakagaba is set to succeed Maj Gen Geoffrey Katsigazi, who has held the position in acting capacity since March 2024 after the retirement of the former IGP Martins Okoth Ochola.

Abbas Byakagaba, a seasoned officer with decades of experience in Uganda’s police force, has been known for his dedication to law enforcement and public safety.

New DIGP James Ochaya

In his new role, Byakagaba will be supported by Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) James Ochaya, who has been appointed as the Deputy Inspector General of Police. Ochaya, also a veteran officer, is known for his strategic acumen and leadership in various capacities within the police force.
