Police Halts NUP Consultative Activities After Deadly Traffic Incident

By Mukembo Wilfred

A tragic incident unfolded on Friday, May 31st, 2024, shaking the serene atmosphere along the Kampala-Masaka Highway. At approximately 10:00 AM, chaos erupted near St Lawrence College, Maya, as a fatal accident claimed the lives of three individuals and left several others gravely injured.

The collision involved two motor vehicles and four motorcycles, all part of a motorcade accompanying leaders of the National Unity Platform (NUP) on their way to Masaka for consultative activities.

The aftermath of the accident painted a grim picture of devastation and loss, as emergency responders scrambled to attend to the wounded, rushing them to medical facilities yet to be identified by the authorities. Preliminary investigations by police  pointed to the reckless behavior of drivers and riders, who disregarded road safety protocols and careened down the highway at excessive speeds, oblivious to the potential consequences for fellow road users.

In a statement issued by SCP Enanga Fred, the Police Spokesperson, it was revealed that prior discussions between police leadership and the National Unity Platform had outlined protocols for conducting consultative meetings. However, the NUP’s failure to adhere to the agreed-upon guidelines, coupled with the tragic events at Maya, prompted the police management to take decisive action.

With immediate effect, the police announced the suspension of all further consultative activities by the NUP until a thorough investigation into the incident could be completed and necessary measures put in place to prevent such occurrences in the future. Emphasizing the paramount importance of public safety and order, SCP Enanga Fred urged citizens to remain vigilant and law-abiding, cautioning against any actions that could jeopardize the well-being of Ugandans.

The decision to halt NUP’s consultative activities underscores the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the lives of its citizens. As the nation grapples with the aftermath of this tragic event, authorities vow to pursue justice for the victims and their families while reinforcing the imperative of responsible conduct on the roads.

In the wake of this harrowing incident, Uganda stands united in mourning, with a solemn resolve to prevent such senseless tragedies from recurring. As investigations unfold and measures are instituted to address the underlying causes of the accident, the nation’s collective consciousness remains focused on honoring the memory of those who lost their lives and ensuring a safer, more secure future for all.
