Rwizi Region’s Territorial Police, in collaboration with Mbarara CPS, have apprehended two individuals, Kamuhanda Evans, 17, and Kamukama Apollo, 43, both residents of Kaliba cell in Bubaare sub-county. Their arrest comes in connection to the heinous torture and attempted murder of 16-year-old Amanya Charles from Kabujye cell, Sheema district, on May 28, 2024, at approximately 10 a.m.

The distressing incident unfolded when the suspects accused Charles of stealing their phones. Subsequently, they tied him to a tree and subjected him to severe torture. Later that night, they callously dug a shallow grave and buried him alive. Miraculously, Charles managed to escape his grave and seek refuge in a nearby shack, where he remained for two days until May 30, 2024, when he was discovered and rescued. He was then rushed to Bubaare Health Centre for urgent medical attention.

The appalling nature of this crime highlights the dangers of vigilantism and mob justice. Charles endured unimaginable suffering simply over allegations of theft. Fortunately, his resilience led to his survival.
Evans and Apollo now face charges of torture, conspiracy, and attempted murder. The authorities stress the severity of these crimes and remind the public of the legal consequences associated with such acts. Efforts are underway to locate and apprehend any additional suspects involved in this brutal assault.

In the face of such barbarity, law enforcement emphasizes the importance of upholding the rule of law and denouncing acts of impunity. SCP Enanga Fred, the Police Spokesperson, underscores the commitment of the police force to ensure justice prevails in this case.
The story is a distressing reminder of the importance of respecting human rights and the rule of law. It’s crucial to emphasize the severity of such crimes and the need for swift and just legal action.
