UPC National Council Endorses Akena’s Leadership, Adopts Key Resolutions Following Extraordinary Meeting

By Jumah Kakomo

The National Council of the Opposition Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has commended Party President Hon. Jimmy James Michael Akena for what members described as his determination and tireless efforts that enabled the party to secure notable leadership positions in the 2026 General Elections despite challenging circumstances.

The endorsement was made during a hybrid Extraordinary Meeting of the UPC National Council held at the party’s headquarters, Uganda House in Kampala, and attended virtually and physically by members from across the country. The meeting was convened following a notice issued by UPC President Hon. Jimmy Akena on June 10, 2026, in accordance with Article 12.3(3) of the party constitution.

The meeting brought together members of the Party Cabinet, UPC Members of Parliament, Chairpersons of District Executive Committees, District Women Leaders, District Youth Leaders, District Leaders of Persons with Disabilities, and District Workers’ Leaders.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday at the party headquarters, UPC spokesperson Arach Oyat Sharon said the discussions were focused, time-bound, and guided by the council’s mandate to advance the interests of the party. She outlined several key resolutions adopted during the meeting.

Among the resolutions, the National Council reaffirmed that Hon. Jimmy James Michael Akena remains the legally recognized President of the UPC under the party constitution. The council stated that any individual claiming to be the party leader without authorization from party delegates through the established constitutional processes would be personally responsible for any resulting actions. The resolution cited Articles 11.2(6) and 13.2(5) of the UPC Constitution.

The council also received, adopted, and forwarded the report of the Party President on the status of the party to the Delegates Conference for further discussion and policy direction.

In addition, members resolved that the UPC should continue engaging with the Inter-Party Organisation for Dialogue (IPOD) and other political stakeholders in the interest of national unity, good governance, and the welfare of Ugandans.

The meeting further directed the party leadership to safeguard the UPC’s flag, logo, symbols, and official documents from misuse and abuse, in line with Article 1 of the party constitution. The council urged leadership to take firm action against individuals found abusing party property and symbols.

To encourage wider participation within the party, the National Council established a 14-day consultative period during which delegates may submit additional recommendations and proposals in writing or through recorded video messages to the Office of the Secretary General at the National Secretariat on the sixth floor of Uganda House.

UPC Head of Media and Communications Faizo Muzeyi said all submissions received during the consultation period would be consolidated into a single report and presented to the Delegates Conference, the party’s highest decision-making organ, for consideration and further action.

He highlights that the resolutions are expected to guide the party’s next steps as it seeks to strengthen its structures and consolidate its position following the 2026 General Elections.
