Opio Vicent Alpha, the LC5 Vice Chairman for Kikuube District, has been formally charged and remanded to Kiryatete prison until July 16, 2024, for allegedly extorting Shs1.5 million from a job applicant under false pretenses.
Opio’s arrest earlier this week culminated in his appearance before a Hoima Grade 1 Magistrate, where he faced charges related to obtaining money through deception. The prosecution asserted that Opio abused his authority to solicit funds from the job seeker, promising employment in return.
Despite efforts from his relatives to secure bail, the court ruled against his release, citing the need for further investigations. Concerns were raised that granting bail could potentially compromise the ongoing investigation into the allegations leveled against Opio.
The case has ignited significant public outcry within Kikuube District, with many residents expressing outrage over the abuse of power and calling for transparency and accountability. The incident has underscored broader concerns about ethical conduct among local government officials and has prompted calls for stringent measures to prevent similar abuses in the future.
