Police cautions Public against anti-corruption march to parliament

By Robert Segawa

The Uganda Police Force has issued a stern warning to political activists involved in mobilizing the public for an unauthorized march to Parliament, urging them to cease their activities immediately.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Kituma Rusoke, spokesperson for the police, expressed concern over reports of unidentified activists using social media to mobilize supporters, which is in violation of regulations.

“While lawful processions and demonstrations are permitted, it is imperative that organizers collaborate with the police to ensure public safety and prevent disruption to normal activities,” stated ACP Kituma Rusoke. He emphasized that any procession should not infringe upon the rights of others conducting their usual business.

The planned march, scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday July 23rd, 2024, has purportedly been organized by activists from various parts of the country to converge on Parliament. ACP Kituma Rusoke underscored that such actions could potentially incite the public, especially since the police have not been formally notified or involved in the planning process.

“In accordance with the Public Order and Management Act concerning public gatherings and processions, the police are prepared to intervene and prevent any illegal activities,” warned ACP Kituma Rusoke. He urged political activists to adhere to legal protocols and refrain from proceeding with unauthorized gatherings or marches.

The police spokesperson assured the public of their commitment to maintaining law and order, emphasizing that any activities must be conducted within the confines of the law to safeguard public security and uphold the rights of all citizens. Authorities encourage cooperation and compliance from all parties involved in organizing public events to ensure a peaceful and orderly society.
