NDA Contributes 5 Million Ahead of Lango’s Historic Coronation Ceremony

By Namuli N Racheal

In a significant move leading up to the historic coronation of Lango’s first-ever cultural leader, the National Drug Authority (NDA) has donated 5 million Ugandan shillings. This event marks a pivotal moment for the Lango people, a Nilotic ethnic group residing in North Central Uganda, who have long been without a cultural leader.

The Lango community has faced numerous challenges, including insecurity and social issues, and the upcoming coronation of Engineer Dr. Michael Moses Okune on November 2 aims to restore cultural identity and leadership in the region.

Recognizing the influential role of cultural leaders in mobilizing communities, the NDA has initiated a partnership with the newly elected Paramount Chief to tackle pressing issues such as deforestation, herbal medicine awareness, and self-medication among the populace. Abiaz Rwamiri, NDA spokesperson, highlighted the authority’s commitment to leveraging cultural leadership for community health initiatives.

The newly appointed Paramount Chief expressed his gratitude for the NDA’s contribution and emphasized the importance of this collaboration. He vowed to address several challenges facing the Lango people, including teenage pregnancies, malaria, drug abuse, HIV, and mental health issues like depression.

The coronation ceremony is not just a celebration of cultural heritage but also a step toward uniting the Lango people in addressing their social and health challenges through effective leadership and community engagement.
