UPC Party Issues Stern Warning to NRM, Promises “Red Cards” Ahead of 2026 Polls

By Jumah Kakomo
The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party has issued a powerful warning to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, signaling tough competition and promising to deliver “red cards” in the 2026 general elections.

This declaration comes amid a heated public dispute between prominent government ministers: Minister of Internal Affairs, Maj. Gen. Rtd. Kahinda Otafiire, Minister of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, Betty Amongi, and Minister of Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng.

The controversy erupted when Otafiire publicly challenged Betty Amongi’s decision to shift her political focus from Oyam South to Lira City, currently represented by Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng. Otafiire accused Amongi of neglecting her current constituency in pursuit of new grounds to evade accountability, questioning her motives. In contrast, Otafiire lauded Dr. Aceng’s leadership and dedication both in her constituency and within the cabinet.

UPC president, Hon. Jimmy Akena, who is also the Member of Parliament for Lira City East, quickly intervened, addressing Otafiire’s criticisms. Akena defended Amongi’s right to contest elections in any constituency of her choosing, stating that the law permits individuals to run for any elective position they are passionate about. He dismissed Otafiire’s claims as unjustified, emphasizing the UPC’s inclusive approach to politics.

Akena, who is preparing to run for president in 2026, reaffirmed his commitment to the UPC’s vision of change and progress for Uganda. He declared that UPC members will contest various positions across the country and called on Ugandans to support their message of hope and transformation.

With the UPC positioning itself as a strong challenger to the NRM’s dominance, Akena’s warning that the ruling party should be prepared for “red cards” signifies the UPC’s readiness to bring new leadership and create meaningful change in the country’s political landscape.
