Bank of Uganda Employee Donates UGX 11M to Rotary Club of Sonde for Construction of Shelter for Children with Cerebral Palsy

Children living with cerebral palsy in Goma Division, Mukono Municipality, now have a reason to smile after the Rotary Club of Sonde launched the construction of a specialized shelter and donated essential items including food, diapers, and other necessities to support their well-being.

The donation and groundbreaking ceremony took place at St. Charles Lwanga Primary School in Bukerere, which has partnered with the Rotary Club to host and care for these children. The items were officially handed over by District Governor of Rotary District 9213, Geoffrey Kitakule, and Rotary Club of Sonde President, Christine Alupo, during a visit to the club’s ongoing projects.

Speaking at the event, Governor Kitakule emphasized the importance of continued support for children with cerebral palsy:

“There is a big task ahead of us. We call upon partners and everyone who can, to unite with us in doing good. Our goal is to make a meaningful difference and transform lives in our communities.”

Rotary Club of Sonde President Christine Alupo highlighted the urgent needs faced by children with cerebral palsy and their families.

“These children suffer from a condition that severely affects their growth and development. They require specialized care, learning support, and medical attention. As a club, we have already constructed a classroom for them and are now working on a shelter that will provide comfort and aid in their treatment,” she explained.

Alupo also noted the impact on parents, many of whom must dedicate their full time to caring for their children.

“We are developing disability-enabled facilities, including accessible washrooms and mobility support. Our partnership with medical experts will ensure proper assessment and personalized care for each child.”

A major boost to the project came from Dorothy Namarome Muinda, representing employees of the Bank of Uganda, who donated UGX 11 million towards the construction. She shared a deeply personal reason for supporting the cause.

“This project is very close to my heart. I have relatives with cerebral palsy, and I’ve witnessed firsthand the challenges these families face. One friend even lost his marriage due to the stress of raising a disabled child. When I heard about this initiative, I rallied my colleagues and reached out to people and offices I had never visited before—because I believed in this cause.”

Muinda expressed her gratitude to the Rotary Club of Sonde and pledged continued support for the initiative.

Christine Kirungi, Director of the Umbrella Cerebral Palsy Association of Uganda, welcomed the support, stating that limited space had previously forced them to operate in shifts, often leaving some children at home.

“With this new shelter, no child will be left behind. This is a major step forward.”

Parents also praised the initiative, highlighting the daily challenges of affording essential supplies and the lack of time to work due to the demands of caregiving. They expressed hope that the new shelter will not only provide proper care but also allow their children to interact and play with peers in a safe and supportive environment.

The construction of the shelter is estimated to cost UGX 20 million.
