By Robert Segawa

A 23-year-old man was lynched by an angry mob in Kabale District after allegedly mistreating his elderly father.

The deceased has been identified as Peter Mutabazi, a resident of Nyarungwe Village, Katokye Parish, Kyanamira Sub-county in Kabale District. He was accused of repeatedly assaulting his 70-year-old biological father, John Turyamureba, and stealing his property.

According to reports, Mutabazi was ambushed by local residents in the early hours of Thursday morning at Rubira Trading Centre. The mob attacked him with sticks, bricks, and a hoe, leading to his death at the scene.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are underway to identify and apprehend those involved in the mob justice.

Maate condemned the act and urged residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. He emphasized the importance of reporting suspected criminals to the relevant authorities for lawful handling.

“A case of murder was registered at Kyanamira Police Post and later transferred to Kabale Central Police Station. The scene was visited, processed, and documented. Statements were recorded from witnesses, and a postmortem was conducted,” Maate added.

Police have launched a manhunt for those responsible, vowing to bring them to justice.
