TikTok User Arrested for Encouraging Illegal Power Reconnection in Uganda

By Robert Segawa

The Uganda Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA), in collaboration with the Uganda Police Force, has arrested a TikTok user accused of inciting the public to steal electricity and reconnect power illegally after disconnection by utility companies.

According to ERA spokesperson Kasiita Ibrahim, the suspect, identified as Kasule Sythn Briton, 27, a resident of Busega in Rubaga Division, posted a TikTok video on June 12, 2025, in which he openly bragged about reconnecting power using previously disconnected wires—commonly referred to as “solido”—and encouraged others to do the same whenever electricity was cut off.

Kasiita revealed the arrest during a press briefing at the Naguru Police Headquarters, noting that the suspect was apprehended and is currently being held at Nateete Police Station. He added that ERA, working with the Uganda Police and the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL), tracked down Kasule and arrested him. He now faces charges, including terrorism.

“Unauthorized reconnection and tampering with meters or supply wires is a serious offense. Theft of electricity via illegal connections is punishable under Section 90 of the Electricity Act, with offenders liable to up to 10 years in prison and a fine equivalent to 20 times the cost of the stolen electricity,” said Kasiita.

He commended the Uganda Police Force for swiftly apprehending the suspect and confirmed that investigations are ongoing. ERA, he said, remains committed to working with UEDCL and law enforcement agencies to ensure offenders are prosecuted.

Kasiita also noted that ERA is working to improve its responsiveness to customer complaints, particularly those related to faulty power lines across various regions.
