UPDF Says Missing Masaka Priest Is in Military Custody Over Subversive Activity Allegations

By Hannah Marion Namukasa

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has broken its silence over the disappearance of a Catholic priest from Masaka Diocese, confirming that he is in military custody to assist with criminal investigations.

Rev. Fr. Deusdedit Ssekabira, a curate at Bumangi Parish, was reported missing on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at around 1:00 p.m. He disappeared from Katwe in Masaka City, where he also serves as the Director of Uplift Primary School.

Following his disappearance, the Masaka Catholic Diocese stated that the priest had been kidnapped by armed men dressed in UPDF uniform and taken from his office. The incident sparked concern within the Church, with leaders demanding clarification from security agencies.

In a statement released on Sunday evening, the UPDF said Fr. Ssekabira was not abducted but was arrested by security forces and is currently being held lawfully.

“This is to confirm that Rev. Fr. Deusdedit Ssekabira of Masaka Diocese was recently arrested by the security forces for involvement in violent subversive activities against the state,” said Col. Chris Magezi, the Acting Director of Defence Public Information.

Col. Magezi added that the priest remains in detention as investigations continue and will be presented before a court of law once inquiries are concluded.

“He is currently in lawful custody to assist with further investigations into the matter. He will be produced in the courts of law and charged accordingly,” Col. Magezi said.

The UPDF clarification comes a day after the Bishop of Masaka Diocese, Rt. Rev. Severus Jjumba, issued a statement expressing concern over the priest’s whereabouts and safety. The Diocese had reported that Fr. Ssekabira was allegedly abducted by unknown armed men, prompting anxiety among clergy and the faithful.

While the military has now confirmed that the priest is in state custody, it has not disclosed details of the alleged subversive activities under investigation.
