With only hours remaining before the 2026 general elections, the Electoral Commission has urged voters to strictly observe electoral laws, rules and regulations to ensure a smooth and peaceful polling process.
Addressing the media at the Commission’s headquarters in Kampala, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Justice Simon Byabakama, outlined polling-day procedures and briefed the public on what to expect at polling stations across the country. He called on voters to familiarize themselves with electoral guidelines to avoid confusion and help maintain order during voting.
Justice Byabakama emphasized that voters are required to leave polling stations immediately after casting their ballots. He explained that the directive is intended to prevent congestion, disorder and any potential violence that could disrupt the electoral process.
He noted that although the law permits voters to remain within a 20-metre radius of polling stations, they are encouraged to return home after voting and, if they wish, come back later to witness the counting of votes. He added that the presence of polling agents and accredited observers will ensure transparency and safeguard the integrity of the exercise.
The Commission chairperson also cautioned voters against engaging in activities that may amount to campaigning on polling day, including wearing clothing bearing candidates’ images or party colours.
Justice Byabakama reaffirmed the Electoral Commission’s commitment to conducting free, fair and transparent elections, assuring the public that measures are in place to promote accountability throughout the entire electoral process.
