Mpuuga, Ssegona, Basalirwa Vow to Fight for Kivumbi’s Freedom After Kitalya Prison Visit

By Kabuye Ronald

The President of the Democratic Front (DF), Rt. Hon. Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba, on Thursday led a high-profile solidarity visit to Kitalya Prison, where Butambala county MP Hon. Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi is currently on remand facing terrorism charges.

Mpuuga was accompanied by senior lawyers and legislators Hon. Medard Sseggona Lubega and Hon. Asuman Basalirwa, the latter also serving as President of the Justice Forum (JEEMA). The trio, longtime friends and political allies of Hon. Kivumbi, met him at the facility before addressing the media to express unwavering support and outline plans aimed at securing his release.

Addressing journalists after the visit, Rt. Hon. Mpuuga stressed that political circumstances would never eclipse the deep bond they share with Hon. Kivumbi.

“Politics will never overshadow our brotherhood,” Mpuuga said. “We are committed to fighting for the freedom of our brother, and we shall stand with him until justice prevails.”

Busiro East legislator Hon. Medard Lubega Sseggona, who has represented Hon. Kivumbi legally for many years, revealed that they had received fresh legal instructions from him to handle his defense in court.

Sseggona emphasized the importance of legal, political, and moral support in the pursuit of Kivumbi’s freedom, reaffirming their readiness to deploy all lawful means to challenge the charges.

“This is a moment that requires total solidarity,” Sseggona noted. “We are fully prepared to stand with our brother through this legal process.”

Bugiri Municipality MP Hon. Asuman Basalirwa echoed the same sentiment, highlighting the depth of their relationship with Hon. Kivumbi.

“Our bond goes beyond friendship,” Basalirwa said. “We are brothers united by a shared struggle to liberate our country. We cannot, and will not, allow him to suffer alone.”

Hon. Muwanga Kivumbi was arrested last week and subsequently charged with terrorism before the Butambala Chief Magistrate’s Court. He was remanded to Kitalya Prison pending further proceedings.

He is expected to return to court on February 3rd next week, as his legal team prepares to challenge the charges and seek his release.
