Bukedea District Woman MP Anita Annet Among has announced that she will no longer contest for the position of Speaker of Parliament, citing the need to preserve unity within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Her decision comes as security agencies, including the police and the military, continue investigations into corruption allegations against her. Authorities reportedly began searches at her residences in Kololo and Kigo on Saturday afternoon.
In a public statement, Among said her withdrawal followed extensive consultations and personal reflection.

“After wide consultations and deep introspection, and to maintain harmony and clarity in my beloved party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM), I wish to categorically and unequivocally state that I will not be offering myself for the Speakership of the 12th Parliament,” she said.
Among thanked President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the NRM, and members of the 11th Parliament for entrusting her with leadership responsibilities as both Deputy Speaker and Speaker.
She also expressed appreciation to her family, friends, and supporters for standing by her over the past five years.
Despite stepping aside from the race, Among pledged loyalty to the party and support for candidates endorsed by the President and the NRM leadership. She also committed to cooperating with ongoing investigations.
“I shall remain available to serve my country as the party and the President may assign me. In the meantime, I pledge to continue cooperating with all ongoing investigations as initiated by the relevant organs of the state,” she stated.
