Government has allocated about 1.4 trillion shillings to the Water and Environment sector in the 2026/27 national budget, with funds distributed across water supply, sanitation, water for production, and environmental management programmes.
According to budget estimates, the largest share has been directed towards urban water supply and sanitation, which has been allocated about 768 billion shillings. Rural water supply and sanitation has received approximately 239 billion shillings, while water for production which supports irrigation, livestock, and agricultural water use has been allocated about 600 billion shillings.
Government says the remaining funds will support environmental protection, water resources management, climate change interventions, and forestry-related activities. Officials say the investments are aimed at improving access to safe and clean water, strengthening sanitation services, and enhancing resilience to climate change across the country.
The investment forms part of government’s broader strategy to promote sustainable development and improve the quality of life for Ugandans. Authorities say the programmes will contribute to public health, environmental conservation, and economic growth.
