Court Remands Chris Obore, Six Senior Parliament Officials to Prison on Graft Charges

By Kabuye Ronald

Seven senior officials from the Parliament of Uganda have been remanded to prison until July 7, 2026, after appearing before the Anti-Corruption Court on charges of embezzlement, money laundering, and related offences.

The officials were arraigned on Thursday following their arrest in an operation conducted by the Inspector General of Government (IGG), marking one of the latest high-profile anti-corruption prosecutions involving senior public officials.

Among those charged is the Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Chris Ariko Obore, who prosecutors allege embezzled Shs5.2 billion from the Parliament of Uganda by virtue of his office.

Also charged is Director of Human Resource Daniel Adilo, who is accused of embezzling Shs14.6 billion in public funds while serving in his official capacity.

Leonard Okema, the Executive Secretary in the Office of the Speaker, is accused of embezzling Shs3.5 billion that prosecutors say had been entrusted to him through his office.

The remaining accused are Rajab Kaaya Ssemalulu, Emmanuel Emuron Okwi, Stella Itute, and Vincent Otebata. They face charges related to the alleged embezzlement of public funds, money laundering, and other offences under the Anti-Corruption Act.

According to the prosecution, the accused are charged with multiple counts of embezzlement contrary to Sections 18(a) and 18(i)(iii) of the Anti-Corruption Act, Cap. 116.

All seven officials pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Anti-Corruption Court ordered that they be remanded until July 7, 2026, when they will return to court for further proceedings as investigations and prosecution of the case continue.
