Hon Mariam Seif Calls for Speedy Construction of Iganga Central Market

By Obbo Yusuf

Iganga Woman Member of Parliament Hon. Mariam Seif has called on the government to speed up plans for the construction of a modern central market in Iganga Municipality.

Seif says Iganga, being a major commercial centre in Busoga, attracts large numbers of people engaged in small-scale businesses, many of whom have been forced to operate from streets and kiosks due to the lack of adequate market space.

She noted that government’s efforts to stop street vending have left many traders without proper places to conduct their businesses, affecting livelihoods and commercial activities in the municipality.

According to Seif, the absence of a modern central market continues to hinder the growth of businesses in Iganga, with many traders having no suitable premises from which to operate.

Speaking during a parliamentary session chaired by the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, Seif questioned why the government has delayed the process of providing Iganga with a new modern market despite repeated calls from leaders and residents.

She urged the government to prioritise Iganga and fast-track the process of constructing the market to provide traders with a safe and organised place to conduct business.

Seif’s call comes at a time when leaders in Iganga Municipality are working together on initiatives aimed at transforming the appearance and development of the municipality.

The proposed modern central market is expected to provide additional trading space, improve the organisation of businesses and contribute to the broader efforts to transform Iganga into a more organised commercial centre.
