Shock and grief have engulfed residents of Naggalabi Cell, Kyengera Town Council in Wakiso District, after a 12-year-old boy died and four other family members were found unconscious in their home.
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning, August 12, 2026, at about 9:00 a.m., when a teacher at Buddo Hill, identified as Nalubega Mary, went to the family’s home to find out why the children had not reported for their examinations.
Upon arrival, Nalubega reportedly found the door open and all the occupants inside the house unconscious. A baby was found crying next to the body of the deceased child.
She raised an alarm, attracting neighbours who helped rescue the victims. The survivors were rushed to hospital in a hired vehicle, while the village chairman notified police.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala identified the deceased as Mutonzi Marvin, a 12-year-old male juvenile and resident of Naggalabi Cell, Kyengera Town Council, Wakiso District.
According to preliminary police information, four other people, including two juveniles, their mother and a housemaid, were found unconscious at the residence.
Police said preliminary findings indicate that at about 7:00 a.m., the housemaid placed beans on a charcoal stove in the garage and locked the house while the other occupants were still asleep before proceeding with her household chores.
The circumstances surrounding the incident have raised suspicion of possible suffocation, although the exact cause of the incident has not yet been established.
Kawala said the four surviving victims were rushed to Mulago Hospital for medical treatment, while the body of the deceased was conveyed to the City Mortuary at Mulago for a postmortem examination.
Meanwhile, some residents have raised suspicions that food consumed by the victims the previous night could have been poisoned. Police collected leftover matoke mixed with groundnut sauce from the home and sent the samples to the Government Analytical Laboratory for further examination.
Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
