A prominent businessman in Kisoro District, Nteziyeremye African, and his wife, Kyompeire Peace, have been shot dead by unidentified assailants in a late-night attack.
The couple was reportedly gunned down near midnight at the gate of their home in Zindiro Cell, Kamonyi Ward, Kisoro Municipality, as they returned from their wholesale shop in Kisoro town.
According to Nelson Tumusime, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, the attackers opened fire as the couple approached the main gate in their Toyota pickup truck.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants, reportedly two in number, immediately opened fire upon seeing the vehicle approaching the gate before fleeing towards a nearby trading centre on a motorcycle.
Police responded to the scene, where a team of homicide detectives, scene-of-crime officers and a canine unit conducted investigations and collected evidence to help establish the circumstances surrounding the killings.
By the time of filing this story, police had not announced any arrests in connection with the double murder.
Tumusime appealed to members of the public who may have information that could help identify and apprehend the suspects to report to the nearest police station.
“We appeal to anyone with information regarding this heinous murder to share it with the nearest police station,” Tumusime said.
Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
