Police Warn Fuel Thieves After Mob Kills Suspected Siphoner in Jinja

By Robert Segawa

The Uganda Police Force has warned members of the public against illegally siphoning fuel from trucks in transit, saying the practice poses serious safety risks and could lead to loss of lives.

The warning follows the killing of 25-year-old Rashid Musene, who was reportedly siphoning fuel from a fuel tanker in Muguluka Zone, Magamaga, in Jinja District.

According to reports, the truck driver raised an alarm after suspecting Musene of stealing fuel, prompting a mob to attack and kill him.

Angry residents also reportedly set fire to Musene’s motorcycle, registration number UEN 107H, near a petrol station and fuel tankers, raising fears of a possible fire outbreak.

Addressing journalists at Police Headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, on Monday, Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke described fuel siphoning as a serious offence that endangers lives and property.

Rusoke questioned how people who illegally siphon fuel store it in their homes, warning that improper storage near sources of ignition, such as charcoal stoves and candles, could trigger fires.

“We are actively hunting for all those who took the life of Rashid Musene, as they have no right to take someone’s life,” Rusoke said.

He warned people involved in fuel siphoning along major highways and in traffic jams that police would take action against the practice.

Rusoke noted that fuel-related incidents involving tankers were not new, urging the public to desist from activities that could cause fires and endanger motorists, residents and other road users.

Police also condemned the killing, emphasising that suspected offenders should be handled through lawful procedures rather than mob justice.
