UPDF defends Maj. Gen. Lokech appointment as DIGP, vows to deal with those fueling violence

By Kabuye Ronald

The Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) has broken silence over the contestation of Maj .Gen Paul Lokech’s appointment as the new deputy Inspector General of Police.

In his 17th December 2020 letter to the speaker of parliament through the office of the clerk, city lawyer Male Mabirizi Kiwanuka cited sections 9 and 14 of the Police Act, which he said prohibits a nonmember to superintend over the Police force thus asking the house not to approve Lokech as deputy IGP

The UPDF’s chief political commissar Maj. Gen Henry Matsiko told journalists at Uganda Journalists Association (UJA) offices in Kawempe, that while Mabirizi has a right to express himself, his assertions are not true.

Related on Friday afternoon, parliament vetted and approved Maj.Gen. paul Lokech alias the lion of Mogadishu’s appointment as Deputy IGP

Matsiko also used the same meeting to dispel the feelings that the Updf has changed from being a pro people force.

He further emphasized that the army and security forces will not give a deaf ear to those fueling political violence, backed by foreign forces.

“Trouble causers may be here, we shall deal with them. And if they think they can take us on, we are ready for them and we shall not miss our words,” Matsiko added.

Matsiko disclosed that Uganda is at the stage of total transformation because of the peace and investment in basic infrastructure which has given confidence to foreign investors.
