The Four lawyers arrested along with Nicholas Opiyo have been granted police bond

The four youthful passionate human rights lawyers who were arrested along with the renowned human rights lawyer, activist and the executive director of Chapter four Uganda Nicholas Opiyo, have been released on police bond by the special investigative unit Kireka.

The four lawyers who have been granted police bond include: Odur Anthony, Esomu Simon Peter Obure, Herbert Dakasi, Hamid Tenywa.

The 2020 outstanding impactful human rights lawyer in central region of Kiiza and Mugisha advocates Eron Kiiza and Primah Kwagala stood surety for the four.

The released lawyers like Nicholas Opiyo are also being charged with offences of money laundering and they required to report back at SIU Kireka on the 29th of December, 2020.

It should be noted that today, Nicholas Opiyo was charged with Money laundering at Nakawa Magistrates court and subsequently remanded to prison.

According to the charge sheet on October 8th, 2020, Nicolas Opiyo through ABSA Bank at Garden City branch on an account number 6004078045 acquired USD 340,000 in the names of Chapter Four Uganda, knowing that the funds were proceeds of crime.

However Opiyo’s Bail application could not be heard because the court had no jurisdiction.

His file was forwarded to the Anti-Corruption Court through the High Court Registrar and matter adjourned to December 28.
