Lord Mayor Lukwago bitter about EC’s suspension of campaigns in Kampala

By Mukembo Wilfred

The Kampala lord mayor and candidate ssalongo Erias Lukwago is bitter about the electoral commission’s declaration of suspending campaign meeting in Kampala and other 11 cities and districts due to increasing Covid 19 cases.

Lukwago who took to his Facebook page says that the EC chairperson Justice Simon mugenyi Byabakama decision means he has declared a state of emergency in those 12 cities and districts which powers are not vested in his commission.

He says that however much they are concerned about the surging cases of Covid19 infections but the constitution should be respected by avoiding reckless and injudicious acts that are likely to drive the country into anarchy.

“In effect Justice Byabakama has declared a Defacto State of Emergency in Kampala and some other districts. He should be reminded that such powers are vested in other organs of State and not EC. We’re all concerned about the surging cases of COVID-19 infections but we must respect our Constitution and avoid reckless and injudicious acts that are likely to drive our country into anarchy.  Banana republic indeed.” posted Lukwago on his official facebook page

On saturday afternoon, the electoral commission suspended campaign meetings in the districts and cities that are categorised by the ministry of health as having high spread of Covid19 by the electoral commission which include: Mbarara, Kabarole, Luwero, Kasese, Masaka, Wakiso, Kabarole, Jinja, Kalungu, Kazo, Kampala & Tororo
